Medical: Commercializing New Technologies
Karten Design transformed a bulky prototype into a marketable product that launched a medical start-up.
Start-up Alsius owned a proprietary technology that controls temperatures in critically ill patients to prevent high-grade fevers. An engineering prototype proved the technology’s efficacy, but showed no awareness of the product environment or user.
We spent time in the field to develop a refined design that meets the demanding needs of the fast-paced and crowded ICU setting. We designed and engineered a solution that is compact and highly maneuverable. Elevated on a mast, the screen makes patient data highly legible and visible even in low light situations. The rotating, tilting display screen and a graphical user interface ensure easy control and a quick read of essential statistics.
In 2007, the CoolGard made national headlines when it was used to preserve the mobility of injured football player Kevin Everett. Alsius was purchased by ZOLL for $12 million in 2009.
