Consumer: Making New Technology Accessible
The Ikan is a time-saving electronic device that allows users to order groceries from the same place they manage their food – the kitchen.
The makers of the Ikan wanted to introduce a product that would help shoppers save time by replenishing their pantry without leaving the kitchen. Though the Ikan had the potential to simplify life for its target users, like any disruptive technology, it faced hurdles to adoption. Karten was challenged to design a product that communicated its time-saving benefit and fit seamlessly into users’ kitchens and their lives with minimal emotional cost.
Informed by research in people’s kitchens, we designed the Ikan in a way that is attractive and easy to use. Its gentle curves, high-level finishes and elegant, neutral colors create a clean, simple aesthetic appropriate for the modern kitchen. We embodied the Ikan as a helpful concierge rather than a kitchen gadget, emphasizing its lifestyle benefits over pure technology.
