At the heart of Cardiac Science’s proprietary technology is an algorithm that can detect abnormal heart rhythms and automatically deliver a corrective shock. Over a near decade-long relationship, Karten Design has developed a range of products that apply this technology to drastically different usage scenarios, environments and users.
POWERHEART AUTOMATIC DEFIBRILLATOR
The first product, the Powerheart, was designed ground-up by Karten Design, from the external housing to user interface to graphic identity. Intended for use in critical care environments, the Powerheart uses bold graphics and clear controls to ensure usability and availability of information.
CARDIAC RHYTHM MODULE
To bring Cardiac Science’s technology to different areas of the hospital environment, the CRM is a smaller version of the original Powerheart that works in conjunction with other pole-mounted monitoring devices at the patient’s bedside. The challenge was to keep the module as small as possible while maintaining ease of use.
Portable defibrillators are at the front lines in giving cardiac arrest victims the immediate care that is essential to save lives. The key to the AED’s effectiveness is its ease of use, as it must be usable by laypeople in addition to medical professionals. Karten Design simplified the user interface to make the device as foolproof as possible, even during the high-pressure scenarios in which it would be used. This included one-button operation and instructive voice prompts to guide the user through the rescue, leading to a device that is widely recognized as the easiest to use on the market.
PERSONAL WEARABLE DEFIBRILLATOR
The concept behind the Personal Wearable Defibrillator is making this monitoring technology ambulatory for high risk hospital patients. We created a portable unit that incorporated the Powerheart technology and addresses the unique requirements of a body-worn medical device.
The Powerheart G5 is the first AED to combine real-time CPR feedback, fully automatic shock delivery, variable escalating energy, and fast shock times. We incorporated strategic visuals, color and forms to help even first-time users quickly understand how to operate the AED. Built-in functional details, such as spring-loaded hinges and an oversized handle, help eliminate moments of user hesitation and enable faster response time.
